Leigh Whannell’s acclaimed 2018 sci-fi thriller feature “Upgrade” is getting a TV series sequel.
Logan Marshall-Green starred as a paralysed widower approached by a billionaire inventor with an experimental cure in the form of a computer chip implant called STEM. The implant offers its host heightened physical abilities which allow the man to exact revenge on those responsible for his wife’s death.
Produced for just $5 million, the movie grossed more than $16 million at the global box office along with scoring excellent reviews and a 2018 SXSW Audience Award.
The TV series is set a few years after the events of the film, the story broadens the universe with an evolved version of STEM and a new host – imagining a world in which the government repurposes STEM to help curb criminal activity.
The series is being co-created and executive produced by Whannell and Tim Walsh (“Shooter,” “Treadstone”) with the latter serving as showrunner. Both will break stories and write scripts for the first season alongside Krystal Ziv Houghton and James Roland.
Whannell is set to direct for Blumhouse Television and UCP with both Jason Blum and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones executive producing.
