Pegg: “Star Trek” Is Better With TV Now

The natural home of “Star Wars” is on the big screen, the television shows are ancillary to that and so aren’t quite the big events that the films are. The opposite is true of “Star Trek” where the TV series have been what define it and the films, even the genuine classics like second and sixth pre-Abrams movies.

The three Abrams-era Trek films were a mixed bag with the third one, “Star Trek Beyond,” stumbling at the box-office and the films effectively on hold ever since.

Simon Pegg played Scotty in the first few films and was a key part of the story and screenplay work on at least ‘Beyond’. He recently told Collider that he is unaware of what’s happening with the films but now believes it should be back with its natural home on television:

“Maybe TV is a better place for [Star Trek] now. Television has evolved so much. Its become something which is very much a contemporary, a peer of cinema. It’s simply viewed in a different way. It isn’t a reduced scope anymore. You can still do masses of interesting things, and it can still look modern and not inexpensive. Maybe television is a better format for Star Trek. That’s where it started, you know.”

The talk comes as “Star Trek” is surging on TV with “Star Trek: Discovery” to air a third season later this year, “Star Trek: Picard” renewed for a second, “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” recently announced and the animated comedy “Star Trek: Lower Decks” in the works.
