McHale Optimistic About A “Community” Film

Having recently hosted the reunion special “The Tiger King and I” for Netflix, actor and comedian Joel McHale was asked about one of his older gigs.

Speaking with Variety, he was asked about the comedy series “Community,” which just became available in full on Netflix earlier this month and has been getting fresh attention again.

The show famously talked about doing ‘six seasons and a movie’ throughout its run, and it managed to achieve six seasons across various networks and outlets in its time. A movie however never eventuated.

McHale tells the trade that’s he’s more optimistic now than ever before that a film could happen:

“There’s way more rumblings than there used to be. Alison [Brie] tweeted that she got a phone call from Sony. They still haven’t called me, maybe Matthew Lillard will take over. But I would say there’s a better chance than there’s ever been… For a long time I was like, ‘never gonna happen.’ And now I think with the renewed interest, and I know the cast is interested, that it could happen.”

McHale is currently serving as a judge for the Tribeca Film Festival’s documentary section and so is watching many of those contenders whilst in quarantine. He’ll also shortly appear in the DC Universe & The CW series “Stargirl”.
