“The Mandalorian” finished filming of its second season and is currently in post-production. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series has pushed back its filming and is unlikely to arrive until late 2021/early 2022 at this point, and the potential Ahsoka Tano spin-off series is in early development.
So what does that mean for the other live-action “Star Wars” film in the works at the Disney+ streaming service – the “Rogue One” prequel series based around Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor character?
Recently, Academy Award-winning special effects supervisor Neal Scanlan revealed he had been at work on the project for about six weeks before they were forced to shut down though they are “trying to do the best we can from home” he tells CBM.
Luna meanwhile recently spoke with Indiewire from his life in quarantine in Mexico City and says that role gave him “the most freedom ever” he has had in his career. The biggest problem they face? Everyone knows how it’ll end:
“I can’t really talk about it. The thing I can tell you, and it’s a nice challenge and it’s a great way to approach a show, but what happens when you already know the ending? Then it becomes about the story. Everything is in how you tell the story and how many different layers you can find. This can’t be a show now where at the end we surprise you with like, ‘Oh no it wasn’t him!’ We’ve already seen the ending.
If you think about it, ‘Rogue One’ started with the same task. The last scene of ‘Rogue One’ is a scene we all know. It makes another part of your brain work [as a storyteller]. You can’t use the same formulas for storytelling you’ve known all your life with this because it’s very different. The big thing is now we start with a character that people already know what he’s capable of.”
Luna was also asked about his future on Netflix’s “Narcos: Mexico” and the actor indicated he wasn’t eager to return to the role: “Not for now, not for now, no, no, no. At the beginning it was fun, but then it became really heavy for me. I need rest, those two years were really intense for me.”
