Disney has reported today that its Disney+ streaming service has surpassed the 50 million paid subscriber milestone globally.
That pushes it past corporate sister service Hulu, with its 30+ million subscriptions, though has a long way to go to catch streaming giant Netflix and its 167 million subscriptions.
Kevin Mayer, chairman of Walt Disney direct-to-consumer & international, says in a statement: “We’re truly humbled that Disney+ is resonating with millions around the globe, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this year.”
The rise in recent subscriptions comes after the nearly five-month-old service began to roll out in more countries around the world including parts of Europe and India. The latter country alone accounts for eight million new subscriptions.
Combined with the coronavirus pandemic keeping people indoors and glued to streaming services, the gamble for Disney seems to be paying off.
