With the coronavirus pandemic forcing regular multiplexes and smaller indie cinemas to close, drive-in movie theaters are reportedly experiencing a resurgence.
Only about 300 are still in operation across America, mostly surviving on nostalgia and second-run screenings, but now they’re getting a reprieve as an enclosed vehicle allows for social distancing and self-quarantining whilst still allowing people to get out of the house and be a part of something communal.
In addition they’re among the few places still able to screen first run features including Pixar’s “Onward”.
Whilst some drive-ins have had to close temporarily due to local ordinances, many remain open during the crisis and filmmaker Edgar Wright has championed going to see them whilst you still can.
