Two PS5 Models Rumored For Launch

The other week came word on the specs for the Xbox Series X, or rather for one version of it.

For a long time it has been reported on numerous tech blogs that the new Xbox will consist of two different versions – a base model that’s cheaper (and possibly lacking a disc drive) and a premium/pro model with more power but also obviously more expensive. Essentially it’s no different to the way we have the Xbox One S & Xbox One X now.

The details the other week were the specs for the high end and more expensive version of Microsoft’s console. Now, a new report via noted Japanese games journalist Zenji Nishikawa on NeoGAF (via NotebookCheck suggests Sony’s plans are the same – with two different versions of the Playstation with comparable power:

“One last time.. I heard that there are two consoles per company. The mid-gen refreshes are going to be introduced at release so that these consoles can run the entire 7yr cycle. XSX that was released yesterday is the top end one. 12 TFLOPS. There will be a base Xbox Series X that is slower than that one. Sony is releasing two PS models. The base PS5 is 9 TFLOPs. Their other one is also top of the line to compete with XSX top dog.

This all makes sense now as to why people are getting mixed numbers for each of the platforms. I also heard that the top of the line models will be expensive. No pricing but I would guess around USD$600. Also no dates on when the top models will come out for PS5. My guess is that they are going to release both models at the same time.”

This would explain the conflicting rumors in recent weeks that the PS5 has either a 9 TFLOPs or 14 TFLOPs potential output, and if true then that would make the high-end console more powerful than almost all high-end single card PCs.

The PS5 reveal is expected to be in coming weeks.
