Filmmaker James Gunn is in the early part of shooting “The Suicide Squad” for DC Films and Warner Bros. Pictures. Once that’s fully wrapped, he’ll get to work on “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” over at Marvel Studios and Disney Pictures.
Speaking about starting work on ‘Squad’ on Instagram, he also revealed he has spent a decent amount of time on the scripts for both films already though ‘Guardians’ took longer as it’s wrapping up a film series and its various character arcs.
Gunn says: “This one [The Suicide Squad] was short! A few months. Guardians Vol. 3 took a year, The Specials took a week and Super took maybe three weeks. It’s always different.”
The main post has Gunn revealing that when he started production on “The Suicide Squad,” the people over at Marvel Studios gave him a personal scrapbook of his time working on the two previous ‘Guardians’ movies. He used that gift to send a message to comic fans – end the petty tribalism for everyone’s sake:
“As I’ve said so many times, at the end of the day, Marvel & DC fans have a lot more in common than they do not. I am now & have been for almost all my life, both. Maybe you like one more than the other – that’s cool – but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them all or that you have to tear the other down.
I know I & my partners at both Marvel & DC believe what’s good for one studio is generally good for all: spurring each other on daily with heartfelt, spectacular & innovative entertainment that keeps audiences around the world loving movies based on or inspired by sequential art.”
Gunn also spoke about his aim for ‘Squad’ in terms of honoring the source material:
“The original Squad was a group of adventurers, soldiers, and scientists, who explored and battled anomalous events. Ostrander introduced the idea of the Dirty Dozen with disposable, second-rate supervillains. King Shark didn’t enter the team till the 2000s. (Our) movie takes elements from all those timelines but is especially indebted to Ostrander (and Kim Yale).”
He’s also posted a photo of himself and his cast visiting a screening of “Joker” with Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Nathan Fillion, Pete Davidson and Sean Gunn among others in the shot.
