Robert Kirkman’s “The Walking Dead” comic abruptly ended this year with issue 193 closing out the series. AMC’s hit TV adaptation of the property however is still around the two-thirds of the way through mark in terms of the comic’s storyline, even as it has strayed considerably from said source material.
The show’s tenth season premiere is about to get underway and while ratings for the series have dwindled from its heyday, it’s still one of the most popular shows on television with no signs of an ending in sight at this point.
Will the long-running series ever actually end? Actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Negan on the series, suggests to Variety that the series might still have another three seasons left in it:
“You don’t want to run it into the ground. Me personally, I’d say let’s go out on top. Let’s go out still being the number one show in the world. Whether or not that happens, I don’t know. I think if we just stuck with the comic book, we’ve still got another three years. We do deviate a lot, but I think there’s probably a good three years of material there.”
The series’ current showrunner Angela Kang is more open to the show continuing further, saying:
“Depending at the pace we go, it could be very fast at the end or it could be very slow. We always fill in with original material. Robert said to me and Scott Gimple, look at all these threads that I set up for you, so the story could go a million different ways.”
Thanks to a frequently changing ensemble cast, the show could keep going for some time to come and certainly the franchise is in no danger of dying out with a second spin-off series and several movies on the way.
The show’s tenth season premieres Sunday, October 6th.
