Netflix has hopped onboard German-language period crime thriller series “Freud” from producers Satel Film/Bavaria Fiction.
The project, the streaming service’s first Austrian original, follows a young Sigmund Freud in Vienna in 1886 whose revolutionary theories are being met with strong opposition from colleagues and wider Austrian society.
He soon meets war veteran and policeman Alfred Kiss and notorious medium Fleur Salome and unwittingly becomes part of a nerve-racking investigation into a serial killer.
The new take is being dubbed a “modern, sexy and suspenseful take on the life of the celebrated doctor”. Marvin Kren (“Tatort,” “4 Blocks”) helms the eight-episode series which begins production in the Fall. Kren, Stefan Brunner and Benjamin Hessler will pen the scripts.
