VOTD: The DCEU Character Problem

A few months back Youtube content creator Patrick (H) Willems came up with a video essay that got a lot of people talking.

In it he explored the ubiquitous bland look of the Marvel Studios films and how, with their flat contrast and color grading and a lack of dynamic range, it made them seem decidedly less cinematic than they could be.

Today he’s turned his attention to the DC Extended Universe and what’s seen as its biggest problem – namely the lack of compelling character arcs and development which is why critics and some audiences are indifferent to the films because they’re just not invested.

It’s a long piece at twelve minutes, but it’s an interesting argument and one worth a look.
