Netflix has premiered both the trailer and poster for “The Other Side of the Wind,” master filmmaker Orson Welles’ long-unfinished final film which has now been completed nearly fifty years later.
A satire of both the studio system and New Hollywood, the film stars John Huston as a film director named Jake Hannaford who returns to Los Angeles after years in self-exile in Europe with plans to complete work on his own comeback movie.
Welles began filming the project in 1970, enlisting friends Huston, Peter Bogdanovich, Susan Strasberg and his partner Oja Kodar. The production ultimately stretched on for years due to financial issues and ultimately Welles died before being able to complete it.
More than a thousand reels of film negatives were left to languish in a Paris vault until March last year when producers Frank Marshall and Filip Jan Rymsza spearheaded efforts to have the film completed with the help of Netflix. With a new score by Oscar-winning composer Michel Legrand and reassembled by a technical team including Oscar-winning editor Bob Murawski, Welles’ vision is finally fulfilled.
“The Other Side of the Wind” is set to make its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Friday and will hit cinemas and Netflix on November 2nd.
