Jurnee Smollett-Bell (“Eve’s Bayou”) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (“Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”) are reportedly in consideration for lead roles in the superhero team-up film “Birds of Prey” at Warner Bros. Pictures. Smollett-Bell is up for playing Dinah Lance (aka Black Canary) while Winstead is on the wish list for Helena Bertinelli (aka Huntress).
The pair joins a consideration list which includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw for Black Canary, and Cristin Milioti, Sofia Boutella and Margaret Qualley for Huntress. Justina Machado and Roberta Colindrez are all reportedly being looked at for Gotham cop Renee Montoya.
The story will be centered around Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn who is the only locked actress at this point. The film follows the adventures of a revolving group of female heroes and villains as they team up to take on the villain Black Mask.
The project is still early in the selection process and no offers have been made, but roles are expected to be locked by the end of September in order to complete training in fight choreography before filming in January. Cathy Yan is set to direct from a script by Christina Hodson while Robbie, Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless will produce.
