Thanks to some recent duds, actor Mark Wahlberg has been named the most overpaid actor of 2017 by Forbes, beating out Johnny Depp who held the honor in 2015 & 2016.
The report looks at the last three films actors starred in prior to June 1st this year excluding “animated films, movies in which the actor had a small role, or movies that were shown on fewer than 2,000 screens.” Then they deduct the estimated production budgets, and divide that by the actor’s estimated pay to come up with a return on investment figure.
In September, Wahlberg was named this year’s highest paid actor earning a massive $68 million from a variety of sources including movie roles, his reality series “Wahlburgers,” and his AT&T spokesperson deal. He just beat out Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who made $65 million.
The report worked out that Wahlberg this year brought in just $4.40 at the box office for every dollar he was paid, a steep drop from his 2016 result where he came in seventh and earned $9.20 for every dollar. Runners up this year included Christian Bale ($6.70), Channing Tatum ($7.60), Denzel Washington ($10.40), and Brad Pitt ($11.50).
With Wahlberg’s two post-June 1st films “Transformers: The Last Knight” and “Daddy’s Home 2” both coming in well under expectations, he may well make the list again next year.
