With pre-sales through the roof, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is already a guaranteed financial success for Disney. Its success with critics and audiences though will be determined in the next few weeks.
No matter how beloved it becomes though, don’t expect a sequel with the same characters. In the latest issue of Empire, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirms they will not make a Rogue One follow-up which she jokingly dubs ‘Rogue Two’.
Visual effects legend John Knoll says the film was always intended to be a self-contained one-off, and director Gareth Edwards adds that the only sequel to ‘Rogue One’ that will ever exist is George Lucas’ original “Star Wars”. Kennedy has made it clear in the past these spin-off fils aren’t designed to build new franchises and will be self-contained standalone tales rather than potential sub-franchise launchers.
Meanwhile for those who can’t wait for ‘Rogue One’, Disney and Lucasfilm are planning one last big tease with a live event on Twitter on December 2nd which begins at 10am US-PST. The event will show ‘never before seen’ content from the film and will only be viewable on Twitter. The event will also feature a Q&A with the key cast, questions can be submitted with the hashtag #AskRogueOne.
