Filmmaker Gareth Edwards shot the upcoming “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” on the Arri Alexa 65 large-format 6K camera, essentially a digital version of a 65mm camera. This is basically as good as it gets with digitally shot films, the same camera was used for parts of both “The Revenant” and “Captain America: Civil War”.
But that’s not all, he and cinematographer Greig Fraser also shot the film using Ultra Panavision 70 lenses which yields extremely wide aspect ratios and lush visuals. Used on only a handful of films in the 1950s and 1960s, they were brought back out of storage for Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight”. ‘Rogue One’ marks their first use with a digital camera for a feature.
