Famed “Tangerine,” “The Florida Project” and “Anora” director Sean Baker has long been an advocate for longer theatrical windows.
Now it appears he is taking things to the extreme with his next feature. Speaking with Screen Daily, Baker revealed that he intends to demand an exclusive 100-day theatrical window for the distribution of his next film
This follows on from when Baker accepted his DGA award last year and called on all filmmakers to demand that studios demand a minimum of 90-day theatrical exclusivity:
“Let’s do whatever we can do to expand that theatrical window. Demand it. We make films for the big screen. Let’s expand it to at least 90 days […] Let’s get it back to the way it used to be.”
The new project is rumoured to be set up at Neon. The comments follow on from filmmaker Quentin Tarantino stating that 2019 “was the last year for movies” as studios are now prioritising streaming profits.
As previously reported here, the average window for 2025 theatrical releases has shrunk to 32 days.
