Disney’s “Zootopia 2” launched to a stunning $39.5 million domestic opening day haul (including previews) on Wednesday.
The film is now tracking for a $90 million three-day (Fri-Sun) take, and a potential $140-170 million five-day (Wed-Sun) Thanksgiving holiday take is being bandied about.
The film has also landed an A CinemaScore, the same as the first film, with a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 95% – higher than the 92% of the first.
Overseas the film pulled in $41.6 million on Wednesday from 17 markets – the lion’s share being $34 million from China. That’s the biggest launch-day gross for a Hollywood studio movie since May 2021.
“Wicked: For Good” landed $17 million Wednesday domestically and is aiming for $61 million over the three-day period, a drop of 59% from its debut weekend, and $91 million over the five-day holiday. By the end of the weekend it’s expected to have grossed $269 million.
“Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” will be third with $5.5 million 3-day/$8.5 million 5-day, while “Predator: Badlands” will be fourth with $3.8 million 3-day/$5.4 million 5-day.
A24’s new afterlife rom-com “Eternity” with Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller and Callum Turner is set to debut with $3.2 million 3-day/$5.4 million 5-day in fifth place. Chloe Zhao’s acclaimed “Hamnet” will debut in limited release with a $1.4 million five-day haul and $11,700 per screen average.
“Running Man,” “Rental Family,” “Sisu: Road to Revenge” and “Regretting You” will round out the top ten.
