Following a $900 million worldwide gross that turned it into one of the year’s biggest movies, Universal Pictures is getting the “Jurassic World: Rebirth” team back together for another round.
The InSneider reports that director Gareth Edwards is returning to direct the next “Jurassic” entry while the film’s main trio of stars – former Marvel alum Scarlett Johansson, recently crowned Sexiest Man of the Year Jonathan Bailey, and Oscar winner Mahershala Ali – are all expected to return as well.
No word as yet on who will be writing the film or when we might see it. The most recent film, penned by David Koepp, took place in a world where dinosaurs are dying out, and they went on a mission to retrieve some dinosaur DNA.
Ali’s character was originally supposed to die at the film’s end, but the filmmakers saved so that he could return for a potential sequel – that choice has paid off.
While the core trio was well received, the reaction was decidedly more mixed towards the film’s secondary storyline involving a dad (Manuel Garcia-Ruffalo), his two daughters and one of the daughters’ stoner boyfriend. No word on whether they will return in some capacity.
One key difference is that this time, Edwards will be developing the sequel from scratch, as opposed to the prior one, where he came in rather far along in the process.
The recent film didn’t achieve the box office heights of “Jurassic World Dominion,” but also didn’t cost anywhere near as much as ‘Dominion’ to make and scored better reviews. Steven Spielberg will also return as an executive producer.
