“I Saw the TV Glow” filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun is set to write and direct a TV series adaptation of the acclaimed Charles Burns comics “Black Hole” for Netflix.
Not to be confused with the 1979 Disney sci-fi epic, the comics follow a group of Seattle teens in the 1970s who contract an incurable sexually transmitted disease that causes shocking physical mutations.
Soon, a serial killer is targeting the mutated teens one-by-one. The film has had a long path to the screen with Paramount initially setting a version up with Roger Avary and Neil Gaiman to write and “Crawl” director Alexandre Aja helming.
Then, in the mid-2010s, Brad Pitt’s Plan B label snagged it with David Fincher’s name linked as a potential director before he refocused on other works.
Schoenbrun most recently directed “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” which is expected to have a festival run next year.
“I Saw the TV Glow” scored rave reviews and was positioned quite highly on many ‘best of year’ lists last year. That followed students whose connection to their favorite television show drives them to question their reality and identities.
