“Top Gun: Maverick” and “Twisters” star Glen Powell has revealed that one project he has long been attached to he has sadly fallen away from – “Captain Planet”.
The original 1990s animated series centered on five young people from around the world who were given magical rings that had the power to control natural elements.
United, they can summon Captain Planet, a climate-centric superhero with shiny blue skin and a green mullet who helps them fight against environmental evils.
In 2016, came word that Powell and Jono Matt had penned a script for the feature described as a “dark, irreverent and subversive take set years after the show with the Captain now a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him”. Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way label was attached as producer.
Things still seemed to be moving as recently as 2023. Then earlier this year came word Netflix was developing a live-action series. Now, out promoting his new Hulu comedy series “Chad Powers,” Powell was asked how the project is going. He tells Screenrant:
“That one’s no longer in my hands. Yeah, they’re going to take it and run with it, but yeah, I wish them the best on that one. I’ve been a passionate fan of Captain Plant since I was a kid.
Obviously, some things that you make in this town find their way quickly, and some of ’em don’t, and there was a lot of rights holders and things like that around it. A lot of opinions, so I’m no longer the guy running with the baton, but they’re going to make something great, I’m sure.”
While Powell may be out, DiCaprio is still involved in the “Captain Planet” TV series for Netflix. Powell will also soon be seen in Edgar Wright’s “The Running Man”.
