Sony Pictures is reportedly in talks with Netflix to make a sequel to animated film sensation “KPop Demon Hunters”.
Though released around two months ago on the streamer, the film has been making multiple headlines in recent days.
The singalong version hit cinemas this past weekend and topped the box-office, the title just became Netflix’s most-watched film of all time on the streamer, and four songs from the soundtrack are now in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 – a historical first.
Much debate has arisen over whether Sony Pictures Animation, which produced the film, gave away a fortune, even as the project had no major stars, hailed from a first-time feature director, and original animation has been on a downward spiral at the box office in recent years.
That said, Sony is expected to have a large profit margin on the title – Netflix covering the film’s entire $100 million budget along with paying Sony a further $25 million.
Sony also receives a piece of soundtrack sales, as well as music publishing fees for certain songs, though Netflix has merchandising rights.
Netflix is citing this as a success for streaming, touting that being on the service has allowed word of mouth to spread and build a cultural phenomenon, as opposed to a cinema release, where a sluggish start can kill a film.
