“KPop Demon Hunters” Sequel Talks Underway

Netflix

Netflix has had immense success with “KPop Demon Hunters,” the animated feature about a fictional best-selling girl band who also slays demons as a secondary job.

The film launched June 20th on the streamer and has dominated the charts ever since, not just Netflix’s own ratings but the Billboard Top 100 where the film’s band has become the first girl group in 24 years to have a No.1.

Now, Puck News is reporting that Sony Pictures is currently in negotiations with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans for a follow-up to the smash-hit film.

Contractually, Sony can create and produce any spinoff or sequel. Netflix has no obligations to renegotiate anything the studio follows up with so if they don’t want it (highly unlikely), Sony could shop the sequel anywhere else and potentially even try a theatrical release.

Despite having produced, created and developed the film, Sony is only going to make around $20 million on the first movie – a small amount considering its runaway success.

“KPop Demon Hunters” is shortly headed to local cinemas around the world for a theatrical release and sing-along events, with over 300 screenings already sold out and cinemas begging Netflix to extend the run. Sony won’t be making money off those ticket sales.
