Arnold Schwarzenegger is optimistic that Edgar Wright’s upcoming new film adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Running Man” will be better than the previous 1987 film adaptation starring “The Terminator” actor.
Out promoting his new Netflix series “FUBAR” returning with its second season this week, the former California Governor was asked by ComicBookResources for his impressions of Wright’s upcoming film which will star Glen Powell in the lead role.
The story follows a man named Ben Richards (Powell) who signs up for a deadly game show in a dystopian world in order to try and win life-changing prize money – to win, though he must evade a team of hitmen. Colman Domingo, Josh Brolin, Emilia Jones, Michael Cera, Lee Pace, Jayme Lawson, Sean Hayes, David Zayas, and William H. Macy co-star.
Arnie says Wright likely has more money and technology than they had on the original to better execute his vision:
“‘Running Man’ was one of the movies that…I think it would have been great if we would have been better prepared for this movie, if we would have had more money for this movie, and if we would have had then… the visual effects, the technology of visual effects, that they have today, all of those things I wished after the movie came out, I felt like it could have been better.
It was great, but it could have been better, and I think that they have a good chance now with the new ‘Running Man’ to make it better. And I hope, for their sake and for my sake, I hope that they will be successful.”
The 1987 film lost its original director Andrew Davis (“The Fugitive”) after delays, but with TV director Paul Michael Glaser rushed into the job – a choice Schwarzenegger called ill-advised as it was shot like it was a TV production. Davis and Schwazenegger did end up filming 2002’s “Collateral Damage” together.
The new “The Running Man” opens in cinemas on November 7th.
