AMC and AMC+ have renewed the acclaimed drama “Dark Winds” for a third season, the order coming just weeks after the second season finale aired.
The series is based on the Leaphorn & Chee series of novels by Tony Hillerman. With at least eighteen books, there’s plenty of source material to pull from.
The second season saw Lt. Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) reuniting with Jim Chee (Kowa Gordon), his former deputy turned private eye, when their separate cases bring them together in pursuit of the same suspect – a killer in the high desert of Navajo Country.
AMC said the first-week viewership for the second season’s first two episodes on AMC+ rose by 146% as compared with the first two episodes of the first season in 2022. The show averaged 1.5 million total linear viewers per episode in the early part of its second season.
Season 3 is reportedly targeting an early 2025 premiere. No episode count is available, though is expected to be six episodes like each of the first two seasons were. The series was created for television by Graham Roland, with John Wirth showrunning the second season.
Lead actor Zahn McClarnon, “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin and acting icon Robert Redford are among the executive producers alongside Anne Hillerman, Chris Eyre, Vince Gerardis and Tina Elmo.
