Netflix has ordered a sequel to “The Wave” and “Tomb Raider” director Roar Uthaug’s 2022 Norwegian action-adventure feature “Troll”.
The original film unfolds in the aftermath of an explosion in the Norwegian mountains caused by a drilling accident – the incident awakening an ancient troll. A fearless paleontologist embarks on a journey with several others to stop the troll from wreaking deadly havoc on civilisation.
Ine Marie Wilmann, Kim Falck, Mads Pettersen and Gard B. Eidsvold starred in the film which was released last December and became Netflix’s most popular non-English film of all time – taking in 103 million views in its first three months.
The film also received relatively good reviews, holding an 89% (6.5/10) score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film criticised for being a “Godzilla”-style rip-off but the production quality was highly praised.
Uthaug will re-team with writer Espen Aukan and producers Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud on the project. The producers say in a statement they are: “Again spinning on a Norwegian fairy tale figure, played, directed and produced by Norwegians.”
The film will start shooting in 2024.
