“The Flash” Has Soft Debut On Max

Warner Bros. PIctures

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “The Flash” film made its debut on the Max streaming service on August 25th and so far has pulled in soft numbers.

Per analytics firm Samba TV, the film caught the attention of 1.1 million U.S. households in its opening weekend (Live+2 day) window on the service. To put that in comparison, that’s 8% less than the 1.2 million U.S. household debut of “Black Adam” in mid-December.

Samba TV samples 3.1 million SmartTV households across the United States. They indicate movie premieres on streamers have generally, and understandably, posted lower viewership numbers in recent times than they did during the pandemic when everyone was housebound and glued to streaming.

As a result, The Flash’s opening weekend figure pales compared to the likes of “Wonder Woman 1984” which did 2.2 million, and James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” which did 2.8 million.

“The Flash” debuted on the subscription VOD service approximately 71 days after its theatrical opening on June 16th but has already been available on PVOD for several weeks.

Theatrically the film took in a worldwide gross of $268 million from an estimated $200 million production budget, making it one one of the most costly tentpole flops ever with expected losses for Warner Bros. to be as much as $200 million.
