The second half of the third season of “The Witcher” is now available on Netflix, and with it comes Henry Cavill’s final appearance as famed monster hunter Geralt of Rivia.
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “THE WITCHER” SEASON 3, PART 2
Cavill famously exited the series after this and will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth in the Geralt role for the forthcoming fourth season, which hasn’t yet begun production and likely won’t until the actor’s strike is over.
Since the recasting was revealed, there’s been the obvious question as to how the changeover would happen – will the change of Geralt’s appearance be explained within the screen universe? Will it be more of just a straight swap?
The latter would appear to be the case as the finale of the third season sees Cavill’s Geralt, separated once again from Yennefer and Ciri, reuniting with Jaskier and making their way through a sunlit forest towards Nilfgaard.
There should be a character personality change next season as Geralt, who has been steadfastly refusing to take sides and getting involved in politics, looks to become involved in the events of the world around him.
However, there’s no indication in the episode’s story of a physical change happening to Geralt, and so Hemsworth will simply appear as the character. Whether fans will warm to his performance, we won’t know until the new season begins.
The third season was shot from April – September 2022 and thus aired ten months after it wrapped. The fourth season was initially set to film September 2023 – May 2024, but with the strikes it likely won’t begin shooting until the end of the year or early next year.
Going by past season schedules, that means we potentially won’t see the fourth season going to air until mid-2025 – a full two years away.
