“Spider-Verse” Sequel Overtakes Original

Sony Pictures Animation

On its second weekend of release, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has surpassed the entire box-office run of its Oscar-winning 2018 predecessor “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”

The comic book sequel has now racked up $226 million in North America and $390 million globally – making it Sony’s highest-grossing animated release in history.

The original, which started slow but had legs that saw it stick around for a long time, ended its run with $190 million in North America and $384 million globally.

The number was hit even with competition from Paramount’s “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” which opened to $60 million and targeted the same demographic. Despite this, ‘Spider-Verse’ still managed to earn $55 million in its second weekend domestically – down 55% from its $120 million debut.

Premium large formats, including IMAX, have also been important in helping the film’s grosses, as have overseas markets like China, which added $34.1 million alone to the global total.

The film has also passed Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight to become the highest rated comic book movie of all time on IMDB with 9.1/10 – just ahead of ‘Knight’ at 9.0/10. The next nearest is “Avengers: Endgame” with 8.4/10.

With its economical $100 million budget, the film is already seemingly into profit though it is about to face some competition for screens from “The Flash” this Friday, followed by the next “Indiana Jones” two weeks later.
