“Hamilton” and “Snowpiercer” actor Daveed Diggs has spoken about how a proposed sequel to 1996 disaster epic “Twister” which he and original film star Helen Hunt were developing was shut down.
In a new interview with Insider (via EW), the “Blindspotting” co-creator confirmed he was set to co-write the “Twister” follow-up alongside Rafael Casal, with Hunt directing a diverse ensemble cast project. That film was revealed back in mid-2021.
At the time, Hunt indicated an ‘unnamed studio’ wouldn’t do a planned sequel featuring “all Black and brown storm chasers”.
She also reportedly indicated that could “barely get a meeting” and this was at a time when the studios were “all about diversity”. Now, Diggs has explained his take on it:
“I’m not going to get into it mostly because I’m probably going to misremember things. But all I’ll say is there was an opportunity where we were talking about that, and it didn’t happen, and the reasons that it didn’t happen are potentially shady. But shady in the way that we know the industry is shady.”
That version was scrapped and now a new stand alone version is on the way from “Minari” director Lee Isaac Chung titled “Twisters”. Set for a mid-2024 debut, Mark L. Smith (“The Revenant”) penned the script from a story by “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski.
The new version, which won’t involve Diggs or Hunt, follows the daughter of the characters played by Hunt and Bill Paxton from the original film. Frank Marshall is producing for Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment. Steven Spielberg is executive producing.
A report at DanielRPK suggests Glen Powell is up for the male lead role in the project which will open in cinemas July 19th 2024.
