“Dungeons & Dragons” Previews Score Well

Paramount Pictures

Paramount and eOne’s fantasy film “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” the adaptation of the popular role-playing game, took in $5.6 million in previews at the domestic box office last night.

The film is set to go head-to-head with last weekend’s box-office king “John Wick: Chapter 4”, and the fight is going to be neck and neck – ‘Wick’ is headed for a $36 million Friday-Sunday second weekend haul, whereas ‘Dungeons’ could land a few million above or below that figure for its initial outing.

Boasting a production budget of $150 million, “Dungeons & Dragons” will need to play well though thankfully has been buoyed by some great reviews and many who’ve seen it calling it a big crowd pleaser with plenty of comedy and effects to get people out to cinemas.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley helm the film, which stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Rege Jean-Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant. In the film, a party of thieves turned heroes must band together to defeat an evil Red Wizard and save a bard’s daughter (Chloe Coleman).

The film caps off a successful March box office with numerous strong performers. “Scream VI,” “Creed III,” and “John Wick: Chapter 4” all broke their own franchise records (the “Shazam” sequel being the only misfire).
