Mark Millar has shared the first look at the artwork for “The Chosen One,” the upcoming Netflix live-action series adaptation of his “American Jesus” comic book trilogy.

In the series, a twelve-year-old finds out that the reason his mother disappeared with him and they’re hiding out in a small town is because he’s the returned Jesus Christ, and they’re doing everything they can to stay alive so he can grow up and face the Antichrist.

The kid also discovers his powers – turning water into wine, healing the sick, and maybe raising the dead. It would mark the second Millar comic-inspired series for the streamer following the rather spectacular failure of the first with the costly “Jupiter’s Legacy”, which was widely panned.

The series adaptation plans to be multi-lingual (both English and Spanish), with Everardo Gout (“Luke Cage”) and Leopoldo Gout (“Zoo”) serving as co-showrunners.

The project follows on from several unsuccessful attempts to adapt the property to film on two separate occasions back in 2011 and 2016.

From the sounds of it, the story has shifted locations to Mexico. Millar teases what he’s seen so far saying: “What they’ve done with this is just masterful. It looks like Roma or City of God, a six-part series of absolute beauty, and I’ve loved every second of this.”

Besides “The Chosen One, several Millarworld properties are in various stages of development at Netflix, including “Huck” and “Empress” films and a “Supercrooks” series.
