The awards season is done and dusted with “Tár” snagging plenty of awards and notices, but completely shut out of the Oscars despite numerous nominations as “Everything Everywhere All at Once” dominated the awards night.
“Tár” marked the third feature directorial effort of Field following his breakout work “In the Bedroom” in 2001 and “Little Children” in 2006. Both those films also scored much acclaim and were awards season darlings.
Though “Tár” marked a return to film directing for Field, it also could potentially mark his last time doing so. In a new interview with Cinema Scope, Field discussed the challenges that come with making a film.
He then surprisingly admitted he’s not sure he has the capacity to make another:
“There’s a real challenge in making a film of any size. It’s not for the faint of heart. I wish I was cut out for different stuff because I probably wouldn’t make more films. It takes a great deal out of me to make a film; I don’t know that I’ll ever make another one.”
Then asked if he believes “Tár” will be his final film, the director replied:
“Yes, I think so…I didn’t think about it until just now. It’s highly likely….if something is really yours, and really matters—and it had better matter, for the length of time it takes to make a film—you have to give it everything. And as you get older, you realize how valuable time is, there’s only so much time in that hourglass. I’m not in my twenties or thirties anymore – I’ll be 60 in year and a half. You start thinking about these things.”
Field adds it is possible he might re-evaluate those statements later, and he won’t stop writing and directing commercials in the near future as “that doesn’t take much out of me”. Field also directed single episodes of HBO’s “Carnivàle” and ABC’s “Once and Again” in his time, it’s not clear if he’d ever consider doing TV again.
