Following poor numbers on Friday in the U.S., weekend estimates are coming in from international markets and it seems many have no interest in “Shazam! Fury of the Gods”.
The superhero sequel is falling short of projections around the world with what was expected to be an $85 million global debut now coming in at around $65 million – being the $67 million global debut of “Scream VI” last weekend.
‘Fury of the Gods’ pulled in a decidedly underwhelming $30.5 million domestically, whilst making a further $35 million from overseas – considerably down on the $53.5 million domestic and $104.5 million overseas debut of the first film.
Whilst the original ultimately made $366 million worldwide on a $100 million budget, the $125 million budget sequel looks like it will struggle to reach profitability – and this is despite Warners backing the film all the way to release.
Even the film’s rare day-and-date release in China didn’t work, the film pulling in just $4.4 million in the Middle Kingdom – way down on the $30 million debut of its predecessor.
Critics are decidedly down on the film with a 53% (5.8/10) on Rotten Tomatoes and audiences aren’t much more enthused with a B+ CinemaScore (the first film pulled in a 90% and an ‘A’ respectively).
Also domestically, “Scream VI” came in second with $17.5 million – down 61% from its opening. “Creed III” was third with $15.3 million, down only 44% in its third week/ “65” was fourth with $5.8 million, down 54% from its debut. Finally, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” was fifth with $4.1 million and currently sits at $205 million domestic and $462 million globally.
