“Superman: Legacy” Pre-Dates The New DCU

Warner Bros. Pictures

It turns out the James Gunn-penned “Superman: Legacy,” which will reboot the DC Comics hero with a younger incarnation, was in the works for months prior to Gunn’s hiring as co-CEO of DC Studios.

Over the holiday weekend, a Twitter user asked Gunn if the “Man of Steel” sequel reportedly in the works earlier this year was retooled into the new “Superman: Legacy” project, of if ‘Legacy’ was always a separate thing of its own.

The question followed in the wake of an Instagram story of Gunn’s that said that the animated series “Creature Commandos” and “Superman: Legacy” were both already in development before he and Peter Safran took over DC Studios.

Gunn confirmed ‘Legacy’ was always its own separate project, no link with “Man of Steel 2,” and that he was hired to write it “over six months ago”. The clarification follows Gunn shooting down rumors the other day regarding the character’s age and whether he has a son.

What we do know is the new film will depict Kent as an “inexperienced cub reporter” at the Daily Planet in Metropolis and Lois Lane will appear as his colleague. No formal search for actors to portray Clark Kent will occur until the script has been completed.

“Superman: Legacy” is slated to hit cinemas in July 2025
