Two films about lethal spiders that are growing fast are on the way later this year.

First up there’s “Sting,” the Australian-made horror thriller which hails from “Wyrmwood” and “Nekrotronic” filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner and which wrapped production this week. Ryan Corr, Alyla Browne, Penelope Mitchell, Robyn Nevin, Noni Hazlehurst and Jermaine Fowler star.

Weta Workshop created the film’s spider discovered by a rebellious 12-year-old girl obsessed with comic books and living in an apartment with her family. She initially bonds with the spider and keeps it as a secret pet she names Sting.

Her fascination increases alongside the creature’s size and hunger – first neighbour’s pets go missing, then the neighbours themselves as it develops a taste for human flesh. The building’s tenants soon realise they are trapped by the ravenous supersized arachnid and the girl may be their only hope of survival.

Studiocanal is releasing the film in Australia, the UK, New Zealand, France, Germany and more. Other deals just made have seen distributors in Latin America, Italy, Spain, the Middle East, South Africa and the Baltic regions snap it up.

Meanwhile Charades and WTFilms are teaming on the French horror film “Vermin” which marks the directing debut of Sebastien Vanicek and is currently shooting Paris with filming to wrap in two weeks.

The story is set in an underprivileged Parisian suburb that has been thrown into chaos following an invasion of venomous spiders after one escapes from a man battling over his inheritance with his sister. The project sees inhabitants living in lockdown alongside terrifying spiders that are becoming bigger and bigger.

Theo Christine, Finnegan Oldfield, Jerome Niel, Finnegan Oldfield and Lisa Nyarko star alongside real spiders in the film which Tandem will release locally.
