Landau Teases “Alita: Battle Angel 2” Plans

20th Century Studios

The James Cameron-produced and Robert Rodriguez-directed “Alita: Battle Angel” grossed over $400 million worldwide, not good enough for the studio to green light a sequel considering its costly budget at nearly $200 million.

Reviews didn’t help, even as most tended to like the project. Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox also seemed to throw out any chance of a follow-up.

Even so, the film has its fans, including some of those who worked on it. Deadline spoke with producer Jon Landau this week at the premiere of “Avatar: The Way of Water” and was asked if he had plans to do any other films beyond the “Avatar” sequels. He responded:

“Well, there’s a little film called Alita: Battle Angel that we’d love to circle back and do a sequel to. Been talking to Robert [Rodriguez] about that and hopefully that comes to fruition.”

Landau then added that he didn’t want to give a timeline or any further details in case journalists “hold it against me” – plus it also cuts down on speculation as from the sounds of it the film is a while off.
