Sony Pictures is ramping up pre-production on a sequel to last year’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” with the film’s writer and executive producer Gil Kenan (“Monster House,” “City of Ember”) set to take over as director.
Jason Reitman, who directed the previous film, will move into a writer-producer role on the follow-up alongside co-scribe Kenan and Jason Blumenfeld. The revival film grossed more than $200 million worldwide.
The ensemble cast, including Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon, are reportedly on board to return. Casting is underway for some new roles, and Kenan says in a statement:
“It’s an absolute honor to pick up the proton pack and step behind the camera for the next chapter of the Spengler family saga. I just wish I could go back to 1984 and tell the kid in the sixth row of the Mann Valley West that one day he was going to get to direct a Ghostbusters film.”
The sequel is expected to return to New York City and the iconic firehouse of the original films. It is currently slated for a December 2023 release.
