Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” unsurprisingly retained the crown at the start of the Thanksgiving holiday box office.
The superhero sequel picked up $10 million on Wednesday and is reportedly on pace to earn roughly $63 million over the five-day period – a figure the studio should be quite happy with.
It certainly compensates for the numbers for Disney Animation’s $180 million-budgeted animated adventure “Strange World,” a film that is looking to be one of the Mouse House’s biggest bombs.
That film pulled in a disappointing $4.2 million on Wednesday, and its five-day haul is now tracking to come in at under $24 million. That’s nearly half that of last year’s “Encanto” film which earned $40.3 million over the five-day holiday in 2021 (and that itself was seen as a soft debut).
Others are also facing tough conditions. Sony’s inspirational fighter pilot drama “Devotion” grossed $1.8 million on Wednesday ahead of a five-day haul that looks to be only about $10.2 million.
The Timothee Chalamet-led “Bones and All” earned roughly $900,000 on Wednesday and is on pace to earn $4.3 million over the five-day period, soft but still better than the wider expansion of Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” which snagged $400,000 on Wednesday and is only expected to earn $3 million over the Thanksgiving holiday.
Faring better is “The Menu,” which earned $1.1 million Wednesday and should pick up $8 million over the holiday. The overall box office is shaping up to be down about 10% from last Thanksgiving and around 50% from pre-pandemic times.
