A few days ago, former “Friends” star Matthew Perry made headlines for some baffling comments he made about Keanu Reeves in his upcoming memoir.
Now, EW reports that Perry is walking back those comments in a public apology about the parts of his memoir that appear to slander Reeves – a man whom he has never worked and who has no apparent direct connection with Perry.
In a statement to People, Perry says he chose Reeves’ name at random, and he doesn’t have any issue with the actor:
“I’m actually a big fan of Keanu. I just chose a random name, my mistake. I apologize. I should have used my own name instead.”
Perry reportedly references Reeves twice in his memoir, the quotes referencing the deaths of River Phoenix and Chris Farley and lamenting their passing whilst ‘jokingly’ questioning why Keanu Reeves still lives.
Perry was highlighting late actors who struggled with addiction, as Perry has throughout his life, whilst not considering Reeves’ tragic background and close relationship with Phoenix. At best, the comments come off as needlessly vindictive and made in poor judgement.
The magazine reports that Reeves hasn’t responded to the comments.
