The upcoming sixth entry in the “Scream” series could well be dubbed “Ghostface Takes Manhattan” as the franchise exits the familiar town of Woodsboro, where the first film and most recent two were set, and shifts to New York for the first time.
The new film sees the various surviving characters, and many of the key crew members, returning to follow the story of the Carpenter sisters (Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega) starting over in New York City.
Barrera recently spoke with Collider and the upcoming “Scream” came up, and she discussed how the masked killer operates in a very different way in a big city as compared to one in a small town. She says it’s “like 20 times more mortifying” and explains that people in cities have been socially trained to mind their own business:
“Everyone’s kind of like, ‘I’m not getting into that,’ so it’s mortifying because you’re chased by Ghostface, but you also see humanity and how that reacts in a situation like that. Someone is screaming for help, and no one will come to their help. No one comes to help them… Anyway, I think I’ve already probably said too much.”
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett return to direct the new “Scream” which is currently targeting a March 31st 2023 release.
