Maslany Talks The She Hulk Difference

Following the first trailer for the “She-Hulk” series arriving a few weeks ago, the show’s star Tatiana Maslany has now spoken with Empire about the show itself and how it will differ from prior Marvel efforts.

The series follows the story of Jennifer Walters (Maslany), the cousin of Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) aka Hulk. She also gains the ability to turn green and strong, except she is able to use her entire intellect and continue on as a lawyer – one specializing in superhuman cases.

Maslany says the heart of this upcoming legal drama is that Jennifer is unwilling to use She-Hulk’s powers to become a vigilante and actively rejects them at first:

“She really is the antithesis of most superhero narratives. There’s this great element of denial in her that’s relatable. For me, it was about rejecting what’s happened for as long as I could, as that’s what causes the fun tension between Jennifer and She-Hulk.

She’s in a career that’s male-dominated and incredibly vicious and hierarchal. When she’s heading this superhuman firm, that’s where we get some really fun characters that she’s either defending or in opposition of. It’s like this really absurd take on a legal show.”

She adds a big inspiration for her performance was the late music artist Sophie who Maslany says she watched and studied: “What I love about Sophie’s music is this combo of organic and electrical, industrial-type sounds that felt connected to She-Hulk.”

The series also brings back Mark Ruffalo as Professor Hulk, Tim Roth as The Abomination, Benedict Wong as Sorcerer Supreme Wong (). Wong, Jameela Jamil as Titania, and the likes of Ginger Gonzaga, Renee Ellis Goldsberry, Josh Segarra and Jon Bass. Jessica Gao (“Rick and Morty”) created the series which will consist of nine half-hour episodes.

“She-Hulk” arrives on the Disney+ service on August 17th.
