90-year-old famed movie score composer John Williams has revealed that he’s possibly considering retirement after more than six decades of creating some of the most memorable film music ever made for over one hundred films.
The Associated Press reports that Williams is putting the final notes on the score for the upcoming fifth “Indiana Jones” film which is expected to serve as the last film of that character. Williams tells the outlet:
“At the moment I’m working on ‘Indiana Jones 5,’ which Harrison Ford – who’s quite a bit younger than I am – I think has announced will be his last film. So, I thought: If Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also.”
Ford hasn’t said publicly if he plans to retire and Williams admits he’s not quite ready to slam the door shut: “I don’t want to be seen as categorically eliminating any activity. I can’t play tennis, but I like to be able to believe that maybe one day I will.”
However the demands of the job are a lot, the composer says a “Star Wars” film demands six months of work which “at this point in life is a long commitment to me”. He also indicates he’s now more devoted to composing concert music, including a piano concerto he’s writing for Emanuel Ax.
Should the next “Indiana Jones” be his swan song, he leaves behind an incredible legacy with so much of his music known around the world. He’s won five Oscars and been nominated more than fifty times.
He’s also not slacking off either with a number of concerts planned for the rest of the year around the world.
