Amazon is reportedly in negotiations to pick up the live-action film adaptation of 1980s anime classic “Voltron: Defender of the Universe”.

“Red Notice” filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber is attached to direct the feature which he’s co-writing with Ellen Shanman. Todd Lieberman, David Hoberman and Bob Koplar will produce.

Word first came last month that a bidding war had erupted with Warners, Universal and several others in the mix to land the package which now has arrived at Amazon.

Edited and dubbed together for the western market from the Japanese sci-fi series “Beast King GoLion” and “Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV,” the original “Voltron” cartoon centered on five young pilots in a battalion named the Robot Lions, which are vehicles that join together to form a mega robot known as Voltron.

The show has maintained a cult following in the decades since and saw reboots for NickToon in 2011 and Netflix in 2016. DreamWorks at one point tried to develop an animated feature.
