Despite having a highly troubled and very publicly messy release, the recent “Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition” remaster was a sales smash.
Rockstar Games re-released a trio of the most famous entries in the franchise as a box-set late last year. The result was skewered by critics and fans as the releases ended up being plagued with bugs, texture problems, and other oddities like rain that left the title virtually unplayable.
The most egregious problems have since been fixed with patches, nevertheless it was seen as a rare PR stumble by Rockstar and one of the biggest disappointments in gaming last year.
Now as part of an investor presentation, sales numbers have been revealed and journalists have worked out the recent re-release sold around 10 million copies. In addition, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick noted that sales of the title “significantly exceeded” company expectations.
As a franchise, it was also revealed “Grand Theft Auto” has sold 370 million units with roughly 160 million of them being “Grand Theft Auto V”.
In addition wild west series “Red Dead Redemption” has sold more than 65 million units worldwide – 43 million of which were the sequel which has become the tenth highest selling game of all time. No word as yet in regards to a much desired remaster or remake of the first “Red Dead Redemption” ever making it to stores.
