Pioneering visual effects legend Douglas Trumbull has died at the age of 79.
Trumbull was key to creating the awe-inspiring visuals of iconic science fiction films like Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey,” Steven Spielberg’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner,” Terence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” and Robert Wise’s “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” and “The Andromeda Strain”.
He also directed, making his debut with the Bruce Dern-led “Silent Running” and also helmed the Christopher Walken-led “Brainstorm”. He also did some uncredited work on “The Towering Inferno”.
His daughter Amy Trumbull said in a statement on social media that her father “died last night after a major two year battle with cancer, a brain tumor and a stroke.”
Our sincerest condolences go out to his family, friends and fans.
