Reviews are out for Lana Wachowski’s “The Matrix Resurrections” with the reaction on the positive, if a bit mixed, side. The film scored a 65/100 on Metacritic along with a 70% (6.4/10) on Rotten Tomatoes.
This legacy sequel, the fourth film in the series overall, serves as a combination refresh, satire and update of the franchise. It also deliberately evokes comparisons to the first film both with its use of clips from the original combined with some structural beats designed to deliberately match the first film.
That leaves an obvious question, is this new film the start of a new potential trilogy? Wachowski herself, speaking with the Associated Press, has shot down the idea of any more films in the franchise.
Asked straight up if this is the start of another trilogy, she amusingly points out the film’s producers to make sure they hear her answer which is then a very clear “no”.
“The Matrix Resurrections” arrives in cinemas and on HBO Max today and is on track to earn $40-50 million between now and Sunday domestically.
