Famed comic writer Brian Michael Bendis, who created iconic Marvel characters like Miles Morales, Maria Hill and Jessica Jones, is set to jump the fence and team with HBO Max on a DC project.
According to Bendis’ Substack newsletter (via The Playlist), he has been hired by the SVOD service for an adult animated series adaptation of the comic “Legion of Superheroes”.
The comic follows a group of DC heroes from the 31st century who idolize the heroes from our time. Bendis and Ryan Sook are behind the recent run of that title and Bendis says the series will be based on that run:
“Just like that series, on sale now, it will harken back to so many classics while at the same time doing what Legion does: pushing all the ideas of superheroes forward in every direction. I think ‘Legion of Superheroes’ is among the greatest franchises in the history of comics and I’m as honored to be curating them as I was ‘Spider-Man.'”
HBO has had strong success with adult animated series takes on famed comics in the past from the late 1990s dark take on “Spawn” to the more recent series following the Harley Quinn character.
Meanwhile, The CW will premiere a series based on Bendis’ most recent creation, Naomi, next year. Ava DuVernay is executive producing that series.
