Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has proven a massive hit at the box-office in its launch.
Despite fears over the rise of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, the film managed to earn $587.2 million globally over the weekend. (UPDATE: The final tally has risen to $600 million).
The third Tom Holland-led solo entry ranks as the third-biggest worldwide debut in history behind “Avengers: Endgame” ($1.2 billion) and “Avengers: Infinity War” ($640 million).
Those films also had a simultaneous Chinese opening, something ‘No Way Home’ does not with the film not having secured a release date in that country.
In overseas markets, the film’s opening weekend surpasses “Spider-Man: Far From Home” by 72%, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” by 113%, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” by 183%, “No Time To Die” by 113%, and “F9” by 210%.
Domestically, the film beat out “Avengers: Infinity War” ($257.7 million) to score $260 million – the second-best domestic debut ever and Sony’s biggest opening weekend ever.
