Dolby Vision Live For Xbox Series X & S

Dolby Vision Life For Xbox Series X S

After preparing gamers for it over the past few months, Microsoft has today allowed Dolby Vision support to go live for gaming on its Xbox Series X and S consoles.

Until now, HDR support in games has been limited to the HDR10 standard and not the notably superior Dolby Vision standard used in movies. This update makes the pair of consoles the first and only gaming consoles to play games in Dolby Vision HDR.

Microsoft and Dolby both recommend that users enable auto low-latency mode (ALLM) on their television when gaming in Dolby Vision.

Dolby Vision support reportedly covers “more than 100 next-gen HDR titles optimized for Series X|S” that are “available now or coming soon”. Titles already confirmed include “Gears 5,” “Metro Exodus,” “Microsoft Flight Simulator,” “Psychonauts 2,” “Immortals Fenyx Rising” and upcoming titles like “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Halo Infinite”.

Plenty of modern TVs are capable of Dolby Vision support for movies but aren’t necessarily compatible with it for gaming. Indeed, Microsoft warns “players with TV models that have not been optimized to unlock Dolby Vision with next-gen gaming settings may experience latency issues during gameplay.”

No TVs were capable of gaming in Dolby Vision at 4K/120fps until the other month when LG updated their 2021 line-up of TVs for it. Microsoft claims it is working with TV manufacturers to update firmware support.
